i reallize i don't need cp on black thread but my next rod project will be wrapped in black with sunburst tipping and inlays. i want to cp the sunburst. how is the cp going to effect the black thread? i want the black to be deep. should i use metalics instead for the tipping and inlays?

If you use a fine tipped artist's brush, you can hit the trims without getting much, if any, on the black. Thread tends to wick CP though, so you'd have to watch the edge there.

Or, you can use sunburst NCP.

You could also pull a bit from the spool and coat it with CP prior to wrapping. Just a thought...

If you are going to use CP then use the regular black thread. The NCP black thread tends to change colors with CP.

No matter what you do if you put CP on Black thread it's going to show as a haze. If you really want a Black, Black background I'd suggest using the NCP threads. If you try to just do the thread that needs CP you'll get a halo around it. It will be faint but you can see it.

While it won't help with inlays, any tipping can be wrapped prior to the guides. Once all tipping is finished, coat with color preserver. Be careful to just get the thread per Tom K's suggestion. If too much is used,it can leave a tiny "edge" that will make it semi-difficult to get your guide wraps butted up against them, without a slight rise in the thread. Once the wraps are dry,go ahead and wrap your guides in place. Perhaps when combined with the prior suggestion to pre-coat the thread prior to wrapping, you can get the look you desire with the thread and color you want to use.
