Hi,
My son recently returned from Florida, and he was telling me about this rod he called a sabaki rod. He said they were catching blue runners for baitwith it. He described the rod as a spinning rod with one guide in the butt section of the rod and then the line went inside the rod and came out at a tip top which was designed so that the line came out of the rod and right through the center of the guide. I remember seening something like this about 6-8 yrs ago, but it never seemed to catch on. Does anybody know anything about this type of rod, and can a blank and guides be had for this to make one. Yes and No. It isn't necessary, however. Sabiki rigs are fine on a regular spinning rod. Three things you should do to keep from getting impaled by the little bitty air biting hooks on the rigs while not in use.
1. Don't follow the instructions on the card regarding the bottom weight - pear, pyramid, etc. Instead of tying a weight directly to the bottom of the rig - tie a mono loop with a barrel weight. Use that loop over the reel handle when storing. 2. Sabiki rigs have six hooks - hook each pair (1&2, 3&4 and 5&6) together. This keeps the little boogers from hooking you. 3. The final step is to wrap the rig. Once you have looped the bottom over your spinning reel handle and connected each set of hooks together take the middle of the line and wrap it around the rod a couple of times and use the second guide from the bottom (usually a 16) to hold it. When you want to use it again, reverse the process. This keeps the rigs safe and sound - plus you still own a rod that has other purposes in life. Edited 1 time(s). It sounded like you were asking about the rod more than anything. Cabelas has a rod like this, its called the Innercast or something liek that name. You can see it on their website. I believe Daiwa was the one of the first to try and popularize a rod like this years ago. If you wanted to build one fuji makes the parts to do it (special guide that sends the line into the blank and the special tiptop) they are in the matagi catalog. This is great for using briad line, it would keep you from getting the line tangled in the guides cause there are none. One thing I dont like the idea of is the line picking up all kinds of garbage and pulling into the blank. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/28/2006 02:26PM by Henry Engle. Re: sabaki rod

The Innercast and similar rods are completely different from a sabiki rod. The "sabiki rods" have a much larger I.D. They actually allow the line with hooks and flashers to enter the sleeve for storage. Re: sabaki rod

Merrick tackle carries the sabiki rod blank and guides. Look in their online catalog. It's not where you would think it is. Look in the index and go to the pages where the bronco rods are.
