gunstock finish for wooden grip?

Does anyone know the formula Winchester used for finishing their gunstocks pre-1960. I am making a couple of Walnut grips from the leg of a ruined table. A friend tripped over his dog and crushed it.This is some pretty wood and I'm exploring several different finish options. Thanks. Ralph

If at first you don't succeed, go fishing, then try, try again.

Go with Birchwood-Casey Tru Oil avaliable at Walmart! Forget the 1960 stuff. I use it on my Browning, Remington, etc. and all the rods I build with wood reel seats! Excellant Ptoduct!!

Ralph, I used to work with a guy who is one of the foremost collectors of winchester rifles, to the point where winchester actually consults with him for historical data, and I seem to recall him telling me that in that timeframe, there were a few different finishes that were used, but for the most part, they used a basic oil rub finish, in different degrees, depending on the model and grade of stock.

You can get a visual recreation of just about any stock finish with tung oil (hardest to use) or Tru-oil or Permalyn (easier to use). It's just a matter of matching the wood, stain, the pore filling, and then working the finish up to the level you desire as far as satin or gloss. As far as stain colors, I have no idea though.

If you are going for a full bore historical match on finish, I would suggest contacting Winchester directly, with a rifle model/year that you are trying to match, and see what they might advise [www.winchester.com]

Here's a step by step using modern finish to get an old look. They also mention what Winchester used to use to finish their stocks with.
