Solar Active Thread?

I was doing some site searching on metallic threads and found a new type of thread that changes color in the sunlight. It goes from white to a certain color, or a light to darker shade of a certain color. Has anyone actually used this stuff in rod building? It would add a different dimension to trim wraps or weaves, providing that epoxy would stick to it. You could weave a striped bass that turns into a rainbow trout in the sunlight. What will they think of next. Re: Solar Active Thread?

That stuff has been around for about 6 to 8 years now. The colors are all pastels and unless you want a easter egg fishing rod don't use it. It also turns transparent when epoxy is applied so the whole weave application is out of the question. Re: Solar Active Thread?

I've used it. The results were disappointing. Even a single coat of finish greatly reduces the amount of color change. It the point where almost nothing happens in anything less than full direct sunlight. Same yourself the trouble, don't bother with it.

But there's still the color shifting powder (added to lite coat epoxy and applied to the entire length of the blank) that Ken Preston demonstrated at the Rod Builders show in 2005. Spectra FX made by Alsa- it shifts from blue to emerald in full sunlight and is very impressive.

I bought a half dozen rolls. It's white in my shop and off white in the sunlight. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
