Using CP on offshore rods

I'm building a Calstar Grafighter 40-100 and plan on using Madeira threads. I was wondering would using the cp make for a weak point. I was kinda thinking that the cp wouldn't let the finish adhere to the blank as well and therefore be a risk of a guide coming loose or something since there would be a lot more pressure on the guides than on a bass or inshore rod.
Thanks, Steve Re: Using CP on offshore rods

CP does not create weak wraps. That's one of the silly old rod building myths that needs to die a certain death.
I've built hundreds of offshore trolling rods - up to 130 and unlimited class and used CP on every one of them. I've never had one returned due to any problem with CP. You may also note that most of the builders who participated in the Stand-Up rod article in RodMaker also use CP and most of these guys build offshore and stand-up rods for a living. There are some things I would do on the wraps of a heavy duty offshore or stand-up rod, however. I would double wrap the guides to make the wrap more resistant to abrasion and rough handling. The extra weight won't be noticed on a rod of that size and weight. After the first overwrap, you'll want to put down a coat of either CP or epoxy finish (if you use epoxy, don't make it a thick application, just enough to "stiffen" the thread surface). Then make the second overwrap and finish the entire wrap as you normally would. ............. Re: Using CP on offshore rods

Thanks Tom! I just wanted to make sure before I started wrapping. Thanks for the quick response.

Steve,
I use Madeira quite a bit on guide wraps on heavy SW stuff and haven't had a problem yet. I do pretty much what Tom stated by putting a layer of finish down on the underwraps before the guides go down. I double-wrap all my SW rods and usually do the first wrap wtih Gudegrod A (usually black or NCP) with a flood coat of finish penetrating down to the underwrap. I remove as much finish off the wraps as possible then put the Madeira down as the second wrap with CP and finish. Randy. Re: Using CP on offshore rods

Randy I am one of those speed freaks who does A metallic underwap with inlays and trim and wraps the guides with double D nylon black with trim band. I do all the finishing at the end. After reading the first sentence of your post my initial thoughts were that you CPd the Maderia before applying finish to the underlying threads. I like the way you use your progression and may just try to do a rod that way with incremental finish layers. I may even try to do a hot pink on top! Re: Using CP on offshore rods

Bill,
I really don't know if it's all necessary but it works fine and I kinda stick with what works for me. I just like the peace of mind. You'll probably like the rod I'm currently working on. "LSU" theme FW split-grip spinning bass rod for one of their biggest fans. Randy. Re: Using CP on offshore rods
