Inlays, which method?

In recent months there have been a couple of methods for applying feather inlays discussed here. 1, Using CP on thread and feather, then applying epoxy. And 2, applying a thin coat of epoxy over the thread, then CP or permagloss over the epoxy, next the feather(s), then more epoxy. I've tried both with good results. Is there a preferred method? Does one have benefits the other lacks?

Since you've tried both methods, you would be in a better position to tell those of us who have tried one method, only. Ralph

If at first you don't succeed, go fishing, then try, try again.

This is what I prefer and works for me.

Permagloss to lay the feathers

Thin coats of epoxy over the feathers till covered.

Works for me.

If you use color preserver, watch out for reactions between color preserver and some solvent based epoxies.

Joe,
I use the epoxy over thread, inlay with CP, and finally epoxy finish method. The reason I do this is because the rest of the thread on the rod is done without color preserver. This way the thread under the inlay matches the thread on the rest of the rod. Of course, this wouldn't matter if the thread on the inlay is different than the thread on the rest of the rod. I do howerver think the inlay looks better if the thread is treated with CP first, as long as it doesn't look funny with the rest of the thread on hte rod being darker. That's what practice blanks are for!

Best regards,

Dan Seely
