Use a piece of threaded rod as a mandrill and a hand drill as the power - glue your cork rings on the rod and turn starting with 60 grit on up to whatever level you have to go to reach the level of smooth you want... for the backend you can use a foregrip that is already pre-formed or you can glue 3 or 4 rings together and shape as the other half... reem them out to the appropriate size, adhere pieces to the blank and catch fish! You can do it without a lathe.... my first 5 or so grips were done with a simple electric drill and a 12" long 1/4" drill bit as a mandrel. (used a dryer hose clamp to hold the drill on a board, and a block of wood with a hole drilled by the drill bit as a support) Not perfect but not noticable that they are a few 100ths off.

As far as butt caps, you can use anything you want... I use a lot of the rubber plugs on my bass rods. Just round off the last ring to match the radius on the plug and they look good and are very functional. Lately I have been using a cork ring with no hole so keep a uniform look. Some of the burls are tough enough to use for that, but if in doubt the rubber plugs are cheap and easy to use.

RodMaker, Volume 9 #4. Shaping grips by hand isn't hard and you can get very nice results. It just takes a bit longer.
