I have been doing weaves for a short time now, and I've seen alot of DVD's on the subject. I noticed that everyone has different thread sizes. For example A for weave and C for wrap. Some people say use D ncp with C ncp ( or E reg and D reg ). My question is what is the correct thread size to use, and can I use the same size. Thanx

I have only done a few simple name weaves to date but found I get
the best results if the wrap thread is 1size larger then the design
thread. When I started I would use A over A or NCP over reg. nylon.
While it came out OK I found I got the best look with B over A or D
over C.

I've tried different combination and have found I like the look of using A size for both the weaving and the turning threads, it gives the smoothest edges to the weaves. Using larger sizes gives a blocky look to the weaves imo.
I just posted a weave using A gold metallic with A nylon black for the turning thread as an example

I also like to use (A) for wraps. Like the look of not having bulky threads. Just finished an initial weave were I doubled the threads. Called for 7 strands I used 14 to give the letters a little more width, with out bulkiness of larger thread. Also doubled the wraps for letters and between letters to keep the sizes proportioned properly

As with all things people use what works for them. I use one size larger to wrap with than the pattern thread. B with Madeira 40wt has been my favorite lately.

The pattern and the person that made it should tell you what size threads to use. Jim K. uses a computer program that allows him to compensate for the stretch in the Wrapping thread. He calls it the" turning thread". I use "A" thread for the design and "C" NCP or "D" regular ( they are about the same size and "D" regular doesn't have the gray cast to it ) to maintain proportion. You will find that if you don't and the pattern hasn't been adjusted you will get a design that seems short and fat if you use the same size thread for both design and wrapping. If the wrapping thread is too much larger you'll get a long skinny design. The distortion is about 8% so you could make up for it by adding extra turns of the wrapping thread spread out over the design. I find it easier to use a thread at least one size larger for the wrap than the design. Jim is right on though when he says that the smaller sizes make for a cleaner nicer looking weave.
