I am building myself a new surf casting rod a G Loomis SU1266-2 blank. Mainly for heavy lure work fishing around the rocks. I will put a Shimano Trinidad 20 on it and I was thinking about building it spiral. All my casting rods are spiral and I won't have them any other way, but has anyone built 10 foot and longer spiral binds? Any pitfalls? Any advice?

You'll like it. Read the letter from Bill Falconer in the issue of RodMaker in the mail now as well as view his photos on the photo page here. He makes a good case for spiral wrapping surf rods.

Paul,
I have built for myself a Hastings surf assassin which I got rid of their butt section and extended it out myself to be 1 piece 10'. I did it in the bumper method and it is fantastic. It casts like a dream. Fights fish no problems. I can see no reason why you shouldn't build your Loomis this way. I am using 6kg line spinning off the beach with a Daiwa CVZ 253. Go for it you won't be disappointed. Cheers, Ross. www.therodworks.com.au Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/08/2006 05:59PM by Ross van Enckevort. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
