leather wrap pricing

I just replaced a leather wrap on a Penn International rod. What would be a fair price to charge. I was thinking about $40. I would like to get some feedback from you all. Let me know if this is to much or to little. Thanks

Brian

Brian,

Firstly, did the guy just ask for the leather grip, without agreeing on a price first?

Secondly, what's the cost of all the materials? What's your hourly rate? How long did it take you to install the grip? Surely that should give you a rough price to begin with (unless that $40 is that price? - and in that case, it seems pretty cheap to be honest).

I don't know - they're not terribly difficult to do. $40 seems in the ballpark to me, but I wouldn't do it for much less, if any. $35 to $45 would the range in my mind. That's a pretty expensive rod, $40 to $45 shouldn't be too much to ask for that type of repair. Like Michael, I think you need to get these sorts of things ironed out with the customer before doing the work.

I agree with Michael. Have you worked with leather before? What is the retail price of the rod also what kind of condition was it in? The work price you wre given sounds about right. I am not a Penn Rod fan. I persoally think your job may have not been worth the cost. All I know about Penn rods they are not uilt by Penn

I wonder how much it would have cost had he sent the rod back to Penn for replacement of the grip. I doubt they'd do it anyway but if they did I doubt he'd have gotten it shipped, fixed and returned for just $40. I think you're being very fair at $40.

Thank you for your advice. Lesson learned about agreeing on a price up front. Until now all the repairs I've done have been for friends. This was the first '"stranger" that came to me for a repair.

I would make a guess that this Penn rod cost somewhere between 45 and 85 bucks
