I have the same problems. My guide wraps come out great, my butt wraps have a tendancy to be wavy. I think I just haven't figured out exactly how to apply it best yet. I had good results by spinning the rod at a high speed and then applying, but my last one still came out wavy. Some people have told me applying down the length of the rod vise across the rod helps. At least they know you are not alone.

When I get nice results I feel like I found the holy grail.

I always apply the epoxy on butt wraps lengthwise. I have tried spinning the rod and it always comes out lumpy or wavy if I do it in that fashion. I also let it sit for about 5 minutes and wick off the excess and rotate and repeat the process at least a couple times before putting the rod in the dryer. This works pretty good for me.

Try a little heat as the rod is turning in the drier. Should smooth it right out. Multiple light coats are better than one or two thick coats.

Too much finish is usually the culprit when the surface is lumpy or wavy.

Also keep in mind that most open butt wraps aren't level themselves and the finish will tend to mimic the surface that it's on top of.

I agree with Tom. I do a lot of open wraps and had this problem for a long time. After I tried every trick I could think of I finally hit on a solution that works for me. On open wraps I put on a minimum of 5 lite coats of finish. Each successive coat is a little smoother than the previous one. Eventually you get a nice even finish. It is a bit of a pain to apply that many coats but it works for me.

The secret is long brush strokes the entire lenght of the butt wrap while the wrap is slowly turning in the dryer. I usually do a 12 inch butt wrap and it usually takes 2-3 coats max of Classic Coat to give me a glass smooth finish. don't use the thin stuff unless you want to do many coats.

After a consirable amount of sanding I managed to get the surface leval again. I have done a hundred rods and never had this problem till recently. In reviewing what i am doing different from before I remembered i switched to appling the finish with a spatula!! I applied a new coat with a brush and voila no waves or lumps. I believe the spatula was applying way to much finish which was the culprit. I also thinned the coat a little and will follow this process from now on. Guess the brush works best for me.
