Is there any reason to wrap the end of a tip tip other than for appearance? To me it seems like a waste of weight at the worst possible place.

No, you don't need to wrap it but a trim band looks nicer than nothing. Re: Wrapping Tip Top

Sometimes an over-sized tube has that abrupt step-off from the tube OD down to the blank OD. Then the thread wrap + thread finish can act as a mini winding check to present a smoother transition at that interface, if you want it to. -Cliff Hall. Re: Wrapping Tip Top

You do not NEED to wrap the tip. But I do and have never had a tip that I wrapped come lose or twist on a rod.
To the contrary I have had several rods on which the tip was NOT wrapped come loose or twist over a period of time especially rods that I use for spinner baits were I do a lot of under hand roll type casting Re: Wrapping Tip Top

It's pretty much cosmetic, but I think that it adds a "finished" look to a rod. Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Re: Wrapping Tip Top

I just really like the looks of it, heck, I'll just be honest and say it- I don't like the looks of a tip top that's not wrapped (now I went and did it - open mouth, insert size 12). The tiny bit of weight by such a small wrap and finish is probably very negligible in performance. Putter Williston, ND Re: Wrapping Tip Top

Wrapping the tip top keeps water and contaminants from getting up inside the tube(which over time, can cause the glue to fail). If you don't wrap the top it's a good idea to coat the end with rod finish. Re: Wrapping Tip Top

Some sort of tip top wrap suggests a craftman's careful thinking about the rod he/she has built, IMO. Definetly not required for function.

You don't have to do it but to me it looks like some thing someone picked up at wally world. Re: Wrapping Tip Top

Think of it as balance, not weight but visual. It is purely decorative, but if you don't put it on, it looks like you broke your tip and just stuck on a replacement. Re: Wrapping Tip Top
