Single foot guides on a surf rod

Hi all, got a quick question for you. I'm doing another surf rod and have decided to start off with double foot guides (BMNAG) and finish off with single foot guided(BYAG). I normally underwrap my double foot guides, do I underwrap the single foot, or should I just single wrap and add trrim bands to keep the same color scheme? I realize I can do whatever I want, I was just curious if single foot guides got underwrapped and if so where do you stop the wrap?

Thanks

Tony

No guides need to be underwrapped, single or double foot. It's just a cosmetic touch that you can add, or not. Underwraps do add weight and can undermine performance. This is more noticeable on lighter rods.

In your case, if the surf rod is a lighter plugging model, I think I would skip the underwraps on the tip section (I assume you're using single foot guides to reduce weight there, and if so, why negate the savings with underwraps).

Again, it's up to you. No they don't need it, but if the rod is heavy enough you probably won't notice it if you do.

IF you do under-wrap the single-foot guides, you can go for a symmetrical look by extending the under-wrap the same ~1/8th inch past the heel-side (ring-side) of the over-wrap as you did extend the under-wrap beyond the toe-side of the over-wrap.

Otherwise, you can extend the under-wrap even further toward or past the guide ring and put in some fancy trim work for extra eye-buzz, if you like. But that is entirely cosmetic / psychological, and up to you. Like a warrior who paints his weapons before battle, ... whatever psyches you up, Tony. ... LOL, -Cliff Hall+++

The last "surf" rod I built, actually a 10'6" steelhead blank for throwing lures and very light lead/bait, I used BMNAG (20, 16, 12) transitioning to BLAG (10, 8s...) and it works great. I did use the locking wrap on the single foots; no underwrap on singles or doubles but trim bands on the outside of each wrap.

Marty, did you do trim bands on both sides of the single foot? Or just the bottom?

Thanks for the replies guys, still trrying to decide what I want to do.

I have made several surf rods ,no under wraps and single foot guides. In the past I have a few of the single foot guides come out. Since using the Forhan Wrap on the guides I have not had a single failure. I strongly suggest this technique for single foot guides.
