I've used the search function to get some guidelines on removing old guides and finish. When the application of heat is mentioned are we talking about hand held hair dryer heat or the low heat setting on a heat gun? All I'm doing is taking the old guides and finish off an current model Ugly Stick to put on new Fujis. Any insight? Thanks to all.

I use a low setting on heat gun but ALWAYS keep it moving with your hand behind the blank so you can tell how hot it is. I use heat to slightly soften the epoxy and run a razor up the guide foot to cut it off, then just peel it off Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! I had to replace the tip top and a guide on my kids ugly stick and didnt need any heat. I just cut the epoxy and thread like Mike said and peel off. Picked away at the rest with the thumb nail and a plastic knife. If yours is built like mine was, you might be surprised to find that the trim bands on the were not inlayed but rather were painted on. Go figure. Re: Removal of guides from an Ugly Stik

Well for the Ugly Stik price, I'm surprised they have not found a way to eliminate the thread, still a fairly good rod for the price.

Look real close. A lot of companies use painted "trim bands" not just Shakespeare. As you saw, very people ever realize it unless they try to take it off. Is this a repair or replacement of all the guides?
If you are only replacing one or two guides, you can cut the finish around the blank at the foot of the guide. Then slice the old wrap down the foot of the guide to your cut. If you do this carefully, you can save the el cheapo painted on trim wraps, and then wrap on a new guide with black thread. Re: Removal of guides from an Ugly Stik

After talking to Shakespeare and deciding their guides were too expensive, I decide against just replacing the two bent guides and go with new Hardaloys for the rod. I enjoy wrapping new guides and I don't much care for the single footed guides I'm replacing. It's good experience for me.
