New Guide Counter Weight

This new item is great for larger offshore rods. Designed to reduce the strain put on drying motors caused by rotating heavy, unbalanced rods. It also helps prevent epoxy buildup due to unbalanced rotation. Use it to balance your rod by placing it 180° from the guides (on the opposite side).

It also allows you to wrap successive guides or to make repairs on a fast turning lathe without the thing bouncing and shaking across the room.

I wonder if that was John Stumpe that came up with that?

How would this help the strain on a motor, wouldn't the additional weight increase the strain on the motor?

Billy, it keeps a neutral balance. With weight on one side only, the motor works harder to pull the weight up, and once it is there, it wants to fall over. You can notice the same thing hand wrapping where the more guides that get put on, the harder it is to rotate the guides up, and when they are up, the rod wants to fall over to the heavy side. With equal weight, a motor will always be turning the same amount of weight, rather than working overtime on the "hard side". I tape a bottle of permagloss to the non-guide side to do the same thing that this gadget will do.

Same principle of spiral wrapping! Rod wants to fall reel side down until a fish hits, counterbalancing the rod.

Hi All,

Bill - We have a full time IT guy that is always adding new items and improving the web site, but if you or any other customers are experiencing a speed problem that last for more than a day please contact him a mike@mudhole.com and he'll see if we can find out what the problem is. Please note our web site is built on cutting edge software and applications that may not operate well on older computers or dial up connections. For those customers that experience problems, we recommend they order a copy of the printed catalog or order via the telephone.

Steve - Yes John Stumpe.

Billy - As Mick said, this operates as a counter weight so the rod becomes balanced in the chuck when wrapping or drying. In the past we have used "homemade" counter weights like Mick suggested with the premagloss, but this new counter weight is easily adjustable in both location and the amount of weight - so as you add more guides you can easily adjust the amount of counter weight needed. Re motor balance - it balances the torque on the motor.

This is a must have for rod builders who build a lot of offshore rods with larger roller guides.

Regards.

Something to try Billy. Grab a rod, put a reel on it, and rotate it from the butt end with two fingers. Now tape another reel opposite of the first and rotate it. Even though you doubled the weight, it will be easier to rotate.
