Inexpensive Fly Rod, Reel, Line sets for a class needed

Hi all,

My local Trout Unlimited Chapter is starting a kids fishing camp this summer. We are looking to outfit the first class with inexpensive outfits to learn to cast and catch fish. The class also includes introduction to knots, insect identification, fly tying as well as casting.

We would like 12 sets that are the same rod model so the instruction can be consistent with each student. We do have a budget and are willing to purchase these but as you can imagine, it's not large.

Please let me know if any of the sponsors have such gear available. We would be very greatful for the help.

Thanks in advance.

Terry Turner

From Hook and Hackle... Sounds perfect, is it cheap enough? Buy online, get the web discount. Email Ron, you could ask for volume discount for TU?

CORTLAND FAIRPLAY OUTFIT - 6 weight. This outfit is suitable for all around trout fishing or for bass and panfish fly fishing. Includes: 8 1/2' graphite fly rod, WF-6-F Fairplay fly line, light weight graphite fly reel. 20# micron fly line backing, trout leader, video and booklet on fly fishing.

Item No. CORTFP6. Price................................................................................................79.95 disc..... $63.96

Similar to the Cortlant setup mentioned above, both Martin and Scientific Angler's have complete setups designed to be low cost and include rod/reel line leader. See them all at Wally World, or most outdoor stores. At your local fishing shops I would expect they might be happy to give you a good price on a 12 lot purchase. Likewise, you could arrange the fly tying goods and books in a bigger package designed for your needs. Good to support your local non-franchise Ma and Pa shop. They are far more likely to aid and assist with custom needs and will typically be far more knowledgeable than the "Salesmen" at the high volume franchise.

Check with L. L. Bean. They were giving outfits to TU chapters to use a giveaways at Kid's Fishing Day, etc. I think it is called their First Start outfit. Perhaps they will supply all 12 outfits or give you a very reduced price.

Hi all,

Thanks for the tips. We were hoping to keep it under $50 a piece. Looks like the Hook and Hackle deal is about as close to that as we may get. Hoping to use 4 or 5 wts, but we can't be too choosy I guess.

We tried to get in on the LL Bean deal but were too late for this year.

Thanks again. If anyone runs across good deals, please shoot me an email.

Cheers,

Terry

I have ordered from Hook and Hackle and, like most of the vendors on the left, service was far above average.

The kids can build them themselves first day of camp. You can do it for $50 apiece including reel. Now that would be an experience.

We did float this idea for the curriculum but had to shelve it in favor of time to do the fly tying and casting instruction. If the camp gets extended in future years, we could certainly add this in.
