Rocky Mountain Rod Co

About 3 weeks ago i put in an order for reel seat, guides etc to Rocky Mountain Fly Rod. I have left emails, phone calls, messages but have recieved no responses. I usually buy all my stuff from John though he is usually hard to get a hold of but nonetheless customer service is always good. This time however i am getting fed up. I understand this is not the first complaint to come across this forum in regards to Rocky Mountain, but since i already have paid, does anyone know how to get a hold of him?

I had a problem with them too awhile back. I got a response after I posted a similiar inquiry on this forum. Maybe he'll see this and respond. Draw you own conclusions on this business.

I talked to a freind the other day,who also happens to know John at Rocky Mtn.Apperently over the past couple of months(possibly more) they have been in the process of searching for property in Alberta, buying said property, and moving so most contact attepts with him have probably gone unanswered due to either him not being available,or messages and orders were getting lost/forgotten.

I ordered and paid a year ago, when he was still a board sponser. No reply and no goods! I didn't know he was still in business.
Being based in the UK I can hardly chase him so I wrote it off. The only problem I have ever had in ordering from the States!

David, although we Imperialistic Americans have been known to colonize a few small pieces of property here and there, we have yet to induce the province of Alberta Canada to join the United states, although Lord knows we would love to have their oil and natural gas supplies, and I for one would love their fish : )

Calvin,

Don't confuse lip service with customer service. I've orderd from him twice, and each time it was painfull to get my order. Yes, he's always very friendly to talk to, and makes assurances that he's just about to send you the goods. But then he doesn't.

All I can say is keep calling and leaving messages. On my last order, I had to threaten to contact my bank's consumer fraud department and I got my order a week later. If you paid by credit card or debit card, you may want contact them.

Tony, ever since they opened thier doors, they've had some excuse as to why they can't deliver. My take on them is that they never had the right amount of startup capital to get the business off the ground, now they're constantly behind on cashflow. But that's speculation.

Well! I glad to hear i am not alone with this problem! I think at this stage the only thing i can do is keep hounding him with phone calls and emails, which right now is becoming an extreme inconvienience.

Rocky had quite a great selection of good quality reel seats and guides, but now that they are out of the question can anyone recommend a good general supply company local to Calgary, or western canada?

When i talked to John last a couply months ago he was in the process of moving south closer to the oldman/crowsnest river system. I also hear he recently bought out a walk/wade guided fishing company??

There is a reason that the sponsors of this board will not put you through this sort of thing...its because if they did...they would not be listed on the left for very long. I'm all for giving the small guy or the new business a chance. But as a consumer in any market, your only REAL recourse to bad service is to not patronize them again. In short, If you absolutely positively need it in a reasonable time frame...stick to the sponsors on the left...lol
I usually give a business one shot...if they drop the ball...there are plenty of others that would love to EARN your business.

For Western Canada, try Rodbuilder Supplies, on the left. Andy has been very helpful in building my orders and getting them to me in a timely manner.

Although I do not and cannot vouch for any of the sponsors on the left, I can assure everyone that if a sponsor of this site is caught in anything that resembles a pattern of fraudulent activity, they will not be a sponsor here for very long.

I don't get involved in pricing or general poor business practices and that type of thing, but if I start to get validated reports of anything fraudulent or somehow not on the up and up, I will boot a sponsor in a heartbeat. Luckily, this has only happened about 3 times in 3 years and with well over 50 sponsors per year, that's not a bad record.

Again, not talking about back orders or what some think are inflated shipping charges and that sort of thing - but true fraudulent practices such as credit cards charged or checks cashed and product not delivered. Or selling counterfit items, etc. I won't have sponsors here who do that sort of thing.

What I ask folks to do if they get caught in some sort of activity of this type, is to contact me with the details. I'll look into any such goings on and if I see a pattern developing I will remove the sponsor in question.

John still owes me money from a previous transaction. He hasn't been returning my phone calls or emails for about 3 months now so I finally just gave up. If he still lives in Airdrie, maybe I'll go and bang on his door for you David.

Anyway, I would certainly be remiss not to mention the spectacular customer service that I get from Andy Sneddon of Custom Rodbuilders (Rodbuilder Supplies, on the left) in Victoria. Why I ever went anywhere else is beyond me. He is helpful, knowledgeable, his shipping is fast, prices are great, he's fun to talk to and remembers who I am and what I build and fish for even a year after last talking to him.

I cannot say enough good things about Andy and his business operation.

Shanon

I went to Rocky Mountain to get Dan Craft Blanks. Now I just telephone Dan directly and order from him. It's great to be able to take advice from the man that knows more about these blanks than anyone else. I recently folded up a car seat on FT 10' 4wt and managed to snap 3 of the 4 pieces! Dan offered to replace all three at a cost of just $18 each, fantastic service. I've just ordered a Sig IV 8' 2 weight 5 piece travel rod andcan't wait for it to get here.

John has a decent web site, good products, and has offered me decent prices. However, he doesn't deliver. I'm still waiting on a credit for $50 for product he hasn't delivered. I won't be doing business again and suggest others do the same. He's had ample opportunity to make good and he has failed to take advantage.
