I realize that there are probably 9,000, 872,612 discussions on this board on Perma gloss but I want to ask for the 9,000,872,613 th time about it's use before I'm committed to applying it to a new rod blank. As I understand it from all I have read that I can just apply it directly to the wraps on my guides, very thinly, I might add and with color loc and after three-four thin coats they should be sufficient for a fly rod. Am I missing anything or should I just go for It? I've been practicing on a dummy blank but I've also been brainwashed by a local retailer that says I will be disappointed with the results if I use color preserver. I've been using Flex Coat Light for several rods I've built but I want to skip the mixing of epoxy steps and have it turn out as nice as the FC. One last round at your weigh in's please.

It will work, but they're 2 different animals. You will NOT get the nice smooth gloss look of eopxy finish with Permagloss. It's good stuff but will be more of a "egg shell" look and won't have the closs build up look the regular finish will give you. It's a personal choice. Personally, I think that the eopoxy finish is much easier and better looking, but that's me!

I ihave used Perma Gloss on wraps. I use five or six coats and get a good look. The finish is somwhere between semi-gloss and satin using the paint analogy. I Have never obtained the 3-D look of a high build epoxy. I have had problems with long butt wraps. I stll get premature setting up of the Perma Gloss when I use it for inscription areas. This is undoubtedly due to the high humidity in my basement workshop where I also store my wine, which likes the humidity. I am still experimenting with epoxy for my inscription areas. Threadmaster from Lamar/Andy Dear gives me about the same look as Perma-Gloss.

PermaGloss has a very elegant, bright, clear appearance. But the surface is not glass smooth like most high build epoxies.

It is very easy to use, dries to a much harder yet more flexible condition than any epoxy and will last for years. It will not yellow during your lifetime.

If you do not use CP, expect the wraps to turn somewhat darker and translucent. If you do use CP, the wraps will retain their on the spool color or something very close to it.
