Renzetti Lathe Wrapping

I have not wrapped my Renzetti for a couple of months. Now I am having problems starting and locking the wrap! It seems to be caused by the Reverse Tension Spring. Anyone had this problem?

That spring shouldn't really affect your starting and stopping the wraps. What is is doing or not doing?

You can bypass it and try again and see what difference there is, but I really don't understand how it would affect your starting and locking the wrap - that part of the wrap really depends on you. Not trying to be smart at your expense, but are you sure you haven't changed your wrapping technique during your off time?

Technique may be it. I was having a heck of a time getting used to the CCW rotation of the Renzetti. All my previous experience has been on CW
rotating machines. I tried Ken Preston's method also but the thread (A) locks and breaks when I pull it while truning. All my previous wrap locking was by the crossing over method.

I'll keep plugging away.

The Renzetti reverse tension spring is indeed a universal problem. Renzetti supplies a much to powerful spring on the unit. They supply a spring made of .047 dia piano wire, which is to stiff, and does not alow enough slack to do any good. After much haranguing I had Andy make me a tension spring of .039 dia wire, and all my troubles dissappeared. I have talked to several other Renzetti owners with the same problem and after they had a smaller dia. wire spring installed, they were happy with the results. Somehow though, Renzetti insists on supplying the .047 spring and troubles are pretty universal, although many people do not recognize what the problem is.

Dan,

Take a hard look at the wrap starting method in the most recent issue of RodMaker. I think it will take care of any problem you have.

Tom:

I have not recieved issue 9-2 as yet. And I have no doubt that it is probably a problem with my local USPS. Mail gets delivered to the wrong addresses...A lot. If I don't get it by issue 9-3 I'll oder a back issue.

Dan,

Tom's article in RMM 9-2 will definitely solve your problems I suspect. It's such a simple technique it plumb avoided me 'til I read that article.

I use a CCW rotating power wrapper (homemade) with a portion of lawn mower throttle cable for the "back-tensioner". I was taping the thread to the blank before reading the article.

Do the Rezetti lathes have a mechanism (spring) to let you back off your wraps without relieving tension?

Yes , the reverse spring is my problem. Thanks Ralph O'Quinn, I will look for a .039 piano wire and try that.

The reverse tension spring tension will make no difference once you do it the way the article shows.

If you don't see your issue this week, please let me know.

Tom:

I'm not taking any chances. I ordered a back issue of RMM 9-2 today.
