the story pole?

I have heard the term 'the story pole' used as a tool for guide placement ,but am not sure what it is.
Can someone explain and/or show me what it is? - Other than sending me to the RodMakers Magazine??

If people spent more time on important things, there would be a shortage of flyrods.

It was discussed here in the last week or so. Just a do a search on "story pole" and you should turn up all the info.

Thanks Shawn - Looks like the Mag is the best source to 'see' one

A somewhat similar system has been covered in the magazine but it did not utilize any sort of "pole."

Jim Sawyer - Here is the recent RBO Thread on the Story Pole Method of Placing Line Guides. Read for yourself. IMO, an Equal Angles or Progressive Intervals method gives better results. The Story Pole is one method I can do without. -Cliff Hall+++

Anyone still use the Story Pole guide placement method?
Tim Collins ... 04-20-06 ... 08:59 ... [www.rodbuilding.org]
"I have my bullet-proof vest on so I'll ask the question – do any of the old-time rod-builders still use this method for guide spacing? … I stumbled across the article from the Angler's Workshop web-site, and found it very interesting. Since I still struggle with flexing a blank 1/4, then 1/2, then 3/4 and knowing the difference between a good line angle versus a bad line angle in the static distribution test, this sounds like a reasonable alternative for me." - Tim Collins.

A "Story Pole" is a very long version of the American Carpenter’s Square.

Original Reference: "Applications for Static Deflection Guide Spacing, As Practiced by Jim Mick". - "Story Pole" - [www.anglersworkshop.com]
Jim Mick tells us that he "learned about this static deflection method for guide spacing at the first RodCrafters seminar I attended, in 1994. This was presented as the Australian or down-under method at the time."
