How would a 12 or 13 foot spey blank work for a nice portable bream/crappie pole? How stout is a 6/7 weight spey rod?

I'm sure you could use a 6/7 spey blank for a panfish pole, but that's a pretty expensive way to go. Since these are made to be salmon/sea run trout rods for big water, I'm sure they're more than stout enough for panfish. If you've got bream and crappie that can out fight a salmon, I wish you'd let me know where so I can move there! Anyway, if you want to go that route, some manufacturers offer 5wt spey rods/blanks, albeit a bit shorter (11-13 ft).

Yeah, I admit it would be something of a cadilac pole! Then again, I always get outfished by the guy who bought his at Walmart.

the IST 1382 & 1562 steelhead float rod blanks, or ones similar from the other manufactures would be a much better value and still get the job done nicely.

Marty, It works great, depends on where you fish. Last one I built was on a Cabelas' salmon blank. 10 ft. rod extended the blank to 11 ft. Uses a shakespeare automatic fly reel loaded with 14 lb. test mono. Works great for pulling 1-2 lb. slab crappies straight up out of brush and stumps. I live in Mississippi and the heavy butt and light tip is used for vertical jigging.
