I'm looking for advice on a higher end Mag Bass casting blank (for worm & jig fishing) with a ceiling of about $150 or so. Medium heavy / fast, 6'6". The client is NOT interested in a Loomis blank.
I value you guys opinions and appreciate your response. David Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/26/2006 11:59PM by David Wells. Re: Your recommendations for a Mag bass blank

Last year, I built a 5C66MHF. I love it. The blank is incredibly light, and that pearlescent brown is the prettiest color fishing blank I've ever seen. Just be really sparing on the solvents, as the blank finish doesn't handle solvents well. Re: Your recommendations for a Mag bass blank

I think Andy is refering to a ST. Croix sc5 blank. That would also be my suggestion Re: Your recommendations for a Mag bass blank

The Shikari SHX PMB664 is a nice blank also. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/26/2006 09:35PM by Spencer Phipps. Re: Your recommendations for a Mag bass blank

For bass fishing I would go with a St. Croix blank of SCIII or above. I have an SCIII 6'9" with an extra fast tip that I really like. The SCV should be a super blank for that type of fishing. Re: Your recommendations for a Mag bass blank

I built a Loomis MB 783 Slate and I love it for throwing worms and other plastics. Re: Your recommendations for a Mag bass blank

Shikari SHX. Lots of models to choose from. Also, don't leave out their Spin Bass models. The heavier ones are right there with similar ratings as the MB's.

David , take a look at the Rainshadow IMB mag bass blanks , RX7graphite . Great blanks at a great price . WE have them on our web site Fishsticks 4u .com ,and we are also on the sponsor list . With the Rainshadow blank and Forecast you can easily build it within your budget .Robert Re: Your recommendations for a Mag bass blank

I'm still a novice rod builder but I have a pretty solid experience base in fishing the type of rods you are looking at. I have 2 that fit your criteria and I am very comfortable suggesting, as both are extremely light, strong and will make a great worm/jig rod - a St. Croix SCV and a CTS tournament series. The CTS is available from Andy Dear. I was very impressed with the CTS, and actually chose the blank over another SCV, I won't be able to give you a thorough review because it's not completed yet. You can order it in a bunch of colors if your client is into that, or just a good ol' natural. Also it's not as pricey as the SCV.

I'll chime in to support what Robert said. I've built a few of the Rainshadow RX7 Mag Bass blanks, and they are excellent. Built one for a guy that had all Loomis rods, and he was tremendously impressed. He really couldn't tell the difference in the Rainshadow and the "Slate" Loomis blank.

In the interests of full disclosure: I am just a newbie to rodbuilding. However, I just used a Graphite-USA C65MHXFWDHX blank (6'6" Medium Heavy Extra Fast Action) to build a spinning rod for similar purposes. Since their move, Hastings has lowered the price, it is available in several colors, and Mudhole (a board sponsor) provided excellent service. It is well worth a look.
Tight lines, Hunter Re: Your recommendations for a Mag bass blank
