recently discontinued j. austin forbes fly reels have been showing up on @#$%& and overstock for pretty reasonable prices. anyone have any experience with these reels. they seem to be pretty hardyesque, being made in england by the j.w.young company. Larry,
I have the magnesium, while it is definitley no hardy it is a nice light reel for the price. It balances well on my 1 wt, the only negative is that the reel seat foot is slightly smaller than most others and on my sliding ring reel seat it doesnt fit perfect but it definitley wouldnt fall off in the middle of fishing, but it still should fit and stay on any reel seat on a smaller fly rod. The magnesium also isnt made in england, i believe it is made in japan or korea (i dont have it in front of me). For the 80 or so bucks the magnesium isnt a bad buy. I think the other more expensive forbes reels are probably much nicer and that they are probably made in england, but I have never seen one in person so I can't say for sure. Larry. At the risk of screwing up my inside track on @#$%& I have Avons, Aerials, and Farmingtons and the Magnesiums. I don't believe the Magnesium is made by Young and is not in the same class. Your best value is to buy a boxed set of Avons for $300. Nicer than Hardy's or any American competitors, IMO, and an excellent buy. You won't be disappointed. Don Re: off topic- trout fly reels

I like the Forbes reels, bought the collector set on @#$%& and use the two larger reels, the largest on a 3 wt and the middle size one on a 1 weight. It balanced nicely with the 1 wt I built and the smallest one really wasn't heavy enough. The price is right and the reels perform well. I have some Tibor's I picked up last year for cheap, and I'm thinking of picking up a Marryat, another Forbes (Farmington), or a J Ryall for a six weight.
