Had a long lay off due to some medical issues . I'm back in the swing again. Want to build a fly rod can't remember the distance from the beginning of the cork handle to the first stripping guide, usually falls intoa specific range. I know this is not written in stone but just a starting point. Hope all you guys are well, Its good to be back! Re: can't remember

Hi Bill,
I am glad you are feeling better. I use the following method for determining the initial placement of the butt guide. I hold the flyrod in my hand with my forearm and upper arm in a 90 degree angle (roughly). I then reach up with my othr hand and touch the rod as if I was about to pick up the fly line. I mark this point and then locate the butt guide about two inches above the mark (towards the tip). This is my starting point. I then use the Static distribution system to place the rest of the guides. Once the guides are all aligned and taped into position, I begin test casting and adjusting the guides to get the best performance. I usually find that the butt guide does not move much from the initial position. I hope this helps. Mike Blomme Re: can't remember

You can also start with a factory placement and adjust from there. Maybe St Croix's site ? Re: can't remember

Typically about 28 to 30 inches. Re: can't remember

I like mine further away than the "reach up and touch the blank" method. Tends to help shoot line a little bit. I usually place mine somewhere between 28-32". Re: can't remember

Some have also used a high " V " cast guide moved a few degrees to the line holding side for a straighter line path. Don't know if it really works ?? Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
