Hello all, i need some help on choosing a guide set for one of my blanks. I've a Loomis DS820 spin blank i'm building for ersonal use. It's 6'10" w/ a "mag med. light." power, so somewhere in btween a ML and a faster Med. So I use 7 guides? I'm opting for the RECOIL guides, due to their weight and durablility( rodlockers...) So here's how I was going to set them up, for a 7 piece set ( in order from butt to tip- top):
#20 RSG,#16 RSG, #12 RSG, #10 RSG, #8 RSG, and two #6 RSGs Would this work? I'm using a reel in the 1500 or less size range, how would this go? Re: RECOIL guide sizes for a dropshot rod?

Hi Chris,
You should be very happy with your guide choice. But you will most likely need a #25 butt guide and go to the #6's right after the #10 and skip the #8. Take a gander in the library section here and read the article on the "New Concept Primer" Try setting it up with both the #20 and #25 butt guides. I know those Recoil guides are not cheap and you probably don't want to order extras if you are not going to use them. I have a spec. sheet posted on the photo section. Take a look in my gallery. You may be able to use some cheaper guides to do your testing and then order just the guides you need. Email me if you like and Good Luck! Chris,
This is where I do thing out of the ordinary. IMO jigging rods don't need big guides for any reason. Vertical presentations simply don't need them I don't think. If your going to use it for other things where casting is important than put on the big guides. Picked this up from an old builder who made wallye jigging rods when I was stationed in Michigan. My dropshot rod has the recoil #16 spinning, #10 spinning, #6 out to the flex point of the rod than #1 heavy wire fly guides and tip top. It casts surprising well and has no line slap on the blank while casting with a 1500 reel on it. I'm using a stretched All Star BAST 762S dropshot blank. Re: RECOIL guide sizes for a dropshot rod?

Chris,
I have a Recoil guide spec sheet if it would help. It gives wire dia,i.d.,o.d., and foot to guide center height. send me an email and ill be happy to attach it. I has specs for all their guides. (weight in grams also) nadmot_pierce@yahoo.com Re: RECOIL guide sizes for a dropshot rod?

I agree with Spencer. I make mostly vertical jigging rods for walleye in Detroit River/Lake Erie. For that kind of fishing, there is no casting involved, I would use 20 (max) 10 and 6's all the way. I haven't tried Recoils yet but that is the size of ceramic that I usually use. Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Chris:
I'm with Spence on the sizes. I've just finished one close to this set up (16-12-10-then 6's) and besides being light will cast a country mile. I don't think the larger guides are necessary unless your using heaver Re: RECOIL guide sizes for a dropshot rod?

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to go with a 16-12-10-6-6 set w/ 2 RECOIL single foot fly guides up to the tip. It's true most of this dropshotting I'll be doing won't require anything but short pitches to docks and cover. I fish my dropshots w/ a lighter weight and horizontally in shallower water about 75% of the time. I'll probably never use this rod in water over 30' deep, bcz I use a casting rod for my deepwater d-shots. But I'm definitely going to use a fly rod tip-top and guides for the tip. The tip on my Loomis blank is perfect as it is,so I want as little weight as possible om it...
