Ok- heres what I need to do: add a three foot (or so) extension to a ten foot blank and make it removable. I already have four feet of aluminum tubing that will snugly fit over the blank if I trim about 2 inches off the blank. This is a heaver blank. I am looking to make the finished rod about 13 feet long. Tom K suggested that it would need to screw in. Anybody ever do this before? Something like: Extend it like normal, cut tube several inches past end of blank, insert male and female threaded tube in ends of tubes and glue up. Sounds simple but nothing ever is for me. I don't want to screw this up. Is this a lost cause? I don't want to make the 10 foot piece any longer than it already is. Any suggestions? Handle would need to be about 35" to top of reel seat. Read my response to your previous post on the other thread...
A screw in ferrule (or whatever you want to call it), if you were to somehow design one and have a machinist cut one for you, I guess would work. I have never seen such an extension before. The best thing for you to do is to use a piece of blank to do this, a piece that fits snugly up into the the tip section. Some overseas rod manufacturers provide as an option extensions for their blanks something similar to this, they call then "reducers". All they are is a piece of blank that fits the end of the butt section. You are trying to duplicate this, and the best bet will be to use a pice of blank with the same taper. The best candidate for this is another of the same blank. Some years ago I did this kind of work on a 1 pc lami, used two blanks to make one two-piece blank. It's not difficult to do, just have to be very careful with your cuts. I used a mini chop saw with an abrasive wheel to cut the blank - left nice clean cuts. J.D. - If Tom Kirkman and Lou Reyna can't help, then I have a couple of hard acts to follow, ... but here goes, ...
MINIMIZE the RE-INVENTION of the WHEEL by USING a FERRULED REEL SEAT. BUILD IT with the PROPER LENGTH HANDLE AFT/REAR-WARD of the the REEL SEAT, and BE DONE WITH IT. -K.I.S., -CLIFF HALL+++ GOTO MUD-HOLE 2006 CATALOG, page 83. Josh
If you can talk to the supplier and see if he could get you a short cheap blank of the same material that has the same taper that you can trim, just make a new butt section that fits into that butt. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
