Hi folks,
I have a couple of large spruce burls and would like to make a few reel seats from them. Any info on the specs, length, od, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Spruce may not be best, but is readily available in the woods of Labrador. Thanks, Bob R Re: reel seat insert, need specs to make a few

Most people buy the Skeleton Metal parts)they are going to use then measure it with calipers to make an insert that will fit it. There are so many different sizes it just depends on what you want.

Should have thought of that first, thanks.
I guess I had in mind, and not writing, that i was considering a struble type DL skelton on a 4-7 weight reel seat. Re: reel seat insert, need specs to make a few

You'd have to make the insert to fit the seat. The only way to do that is to buy a seat and measure it, or have someone post the specs here.
I would recommend not making the insert much longer than about 40mm. ........... Re: reel seat insert, need specs to make a few

Bob, I have cut a lot of wooden and stabilized reel seat inserts, and in my experience is, as Tom mentioned is to get the hardware first, and measure, in spinning reel seats, I usually have the central portion of the insert, depending on sizes, 16mm approx, 42 mm long, 17mm approx 42-45 mm long, and also the hardware even in same brands, such as fuji, pac bay, struble, etc, the ID will vary and what will fit with one reel seat hardware may be too tight with another set of the same size, so I always pick the color of hardware and stick with it from start to finish. If you cut too much, just shim with thread. As far as fly seats, I agree that 40mm is about right for the length, with the size reels you have in mind. Just my take on the subject.
