A man is bringing by a steel fly rod for me to replace the cork. he also mentioned the need for a guide. Does anyone have a source for a guide with flanges to clamp the guide feet on to the rod? Also ,who made these fly rods? Thanks in advance. Ralph

I've never seen a fly rod made of steel. Can't imagine it. Must be a steelhead rod. Regardless, any standard guide could be used. Never heard of "flanges and clamps" for guides.

I happen to own three fly rods made of steel. They are extruded steel (long hollow tubes with step down points to create the taper) and surprisingly lighter than you would guess although I wouldn't want to fish with one all day long. I have used them for an evening or a morning and they work pretty well. I have one that is only 7 feet and is a nice little fly rod. There were a number of different manufacturers who produced steel fly rods and some were relatively expensive.

All of mine have the guides wrapped on with thread. I have seen steel rods that use the clamps to hold the guides, but normally those are casting rods. Since you haven't seen it yet, are you certain the guides are held with clamps? You may be lucky and only need to wrap a new guide as you would with any other rod.

I know what I was told. Also, he said it was a 4pc. fly rod, not a telescopic rod. I may need to change the information when I see the rod. Not here yet. Ralph

I have a steel fly rod, it telescopes to maybe 7 ft, cork handle, I think the guides are soldered on, It is hex shaped. I do not know the manufacturer. How rare is it? What is it worth? Although I could not part with it as it is a family heirloom..
