Permagloss users ........

Is it necessary to use a color preserver when applying Permagloss to thread wraps? It would seem to me, that the general opinion of this forum, is no.

My blanks are all dark in color. Black, semi-gloss or matte graphite and unfinished graphite. I will be using Gudebrod A and D regular nylon. My thread color choices, at this time, are all dark ,such as black, deep red, dark blue, charcoal, etc.

In the future, I may go to red, orange, amber, yellow and even mid green thread colors on some of these dark blanks.

Somehow, I can never see myself using any white rod blanks and will stay with the darker looking colors.

Is there a general rule such as dark thread on dark blanks is O K but a CP is needed for light colored thread .... or something like that ?

Any comments and/or suggestions?

I've only done it with one rod, 246 Blue on a black blank - and the color is deffinately darker than on the spool.

Permagloss without color preserver with darken your thread and make it translucent just like epoxy does. Permagloss also contains a ton of solvent and as a result shrinks as it dries making it almost impossible to fill the guide foot tunnell on larger guides. If you want to retain the color of your thread use color preserver. I have had great results with Gudebrod #840 under permagloss. The 840 is really a water based thread finish, but makes a very durable color preserver, although it does darken thread a tiny bit.

Permagloss acts just like finish will. Darken the thread and make it translucent. Just drys faster.You will need CP.
Try on a scrap blank and see how your like it.

Yes, you will have to use CP under Permagloss if you wish to retain the on-the-spool color of regular nylon thread.

I used to fight using color preserver as I knew that it tended to be water soluble, but after talking to Doc Ski in Mexico, I started using a number of coats of U-40 color preserver and two things happened. I get less cracking of guides (which I am not sure if that is related) and it makes it much easier to refinish the rods. We use salt water rods hard and fish almost every day for a six month period of time. After a couple of years, the rods need to be rewrapped, and it is much easier if I have put down several (up to 6) of color preserver. When I need to use perma-gloss due to chipping and deterioration of the blank coating, I always wrap first, color preserve, cover the wrapping with LS Supreme, and then coat the blank as needed with perma-gloss urethane.
