Ken

The bumper wrap system allows you to move the line on casting rods to the bottom of the blank by offsetting the second guide thus moving the guides from the top to the bottom reducing the rods natrual twisting property under load. Use the search feature for Bumper Wrap and search for all dates. Welcome aboard!

Back issues ($7 each) available at www.rodmakermagazine.com

The 2 photographs and the 2 illustrations tell it all, and they clarify much of the confusion of the earlier Posts made before Colby's Article in RMM-8(2) was widely available to most subscribers of RMM. ... IMO: To not have, or to not get, the RMM-8(2) Issue for this "Bumper" Article, so you can save $7, is being penny-wise and pound-foolish. -Cliff Hall+++

BUMPER SPIRAL WRAPS have been used by now on everything from LITE Casting Rods to heavy duty TUNA sticks. So you may have to keep that in mind as you select what is relevant to your interests. ... -Cliff Hall+++

..."The process was written about that way because I get about 25 to 30 e-mails a week asking for instructions on how to set up a spiral wrap. Most of these guys already know how to set up a standard guides on top baitcasting or conventional rod. So I wrote the instructions so that they wouldn't have to learn anything new. Easy for them to do - easy for me to explain in quick fashion."
..."There are many ways you can do this, but if you go the route you're talking about, be careful not to set those first two guides apart by more than about 9 to 11 inches. This is pretty standard on most casting type rods. Then, the bumper guide goes in-between those two." - Tom Kirkman.

..."Yes, as Grant Darby just said, this is The Simple Spiral method, The "Bumper Wrap", as described by Colby & Kirkman. That is, space the guides as you normally would with the guides on top. Flip all except the butt guide. Then insert, at a 90-degree offset, a low-frame, small-ring bumper guide halfway between the butt guide and the next guide. -Done! " -Cliff Hall+++

It's a different type of spiral wrap. With the Simple Spiral, you do not use guides to take the line around to the bottom of the blank. Instead, you just allow the line to go where it would otherwise go naturally, and then add a bumper device (guide) to keep the line from rubbing the blank surface as it passes by on one side.
