For building handles on a mandrel? I have the lathe, have the mandrels, now I just need the wax!

Usually the grocery store will have it near their mason's jars. Sometimes Hardware stores stock it too.

Candles from the Dollar store! Seriously, just use a candle and rub it on the mandrels I glue them up on a piece of waxed threaded rod and then transfer to a mandrel for turning/shaping

I chased my tail around town enquiring and ended up at one of those beauty parlour type places, you know manicures and solar lamps and more for women and they had some and it is a pink colour but it still works and Andy's mandrels think it is just great! John.

i found paraffin at my local albertsons super market. don't rely on the staff there. the guy i asked looked at me blankly. i found it on my own, like mark said, near the canning/mason jar stuff. i imagine you could find it at major drug chain staores, like longs, walgreens, etc (whatever's in your area of the world).

Parafin wax and be found in any store that sells canning supplies. It is cheeper than candles. It is also the same type of wax used in candles

If you use an inch and a half hole saw you can cut some ends out of the sheet of wax(parafin 3/4 in thick) to use one the end of your mandrel if you also glue them up on the mandrel.I use a pistol style quick clamp with 1/4 in holes bored in the pads to allow the mandrel to pass through.On the ends of the cork rings I put the wax rings so I dont glue the cork to the clamp.Does this make sense??

I ream my cork so it fits tight on the mandrel after I have rubbed the mandrel with wax. I use Rod Bond as my glueing agent for the cork. I put a small ring of glue on the cork ½ way between the center hole and the outer edge. Twist the next cork onto the cork with glue. Do this till you have built
You’re desired length of the grip. Clamp down. You may get some glue seepage on the outer edge if this happens, wipe it off with alcohol. After glue has set up You should be able to push it right off the mandrel
I also use a pistel grip clamp.I also use my grip to remove the cork from te manderl.

Thank You, Fred, I needed that tip. I've been having trouble getting teflon tape to stick to the clamp pads. Your tip makes that unnessessary. Ralph

Fred that's any awesome idea! I've always just rubbed wax on where the cork meets the clamp. Thanks a lot.
