applying guides to a blank

Should guide feet be filed down? Also, should they be glued before wrapped?

Thanks for the help,
Will

Yes, there is an excellent article in RodMaker on 'guide foot preparation' with photographs that show where the thread should end. Some people use "guide foot placement adhesive" others use masking tape and others use dental (braces rubber bands) or slices of surgical tubing - all work. More about your dexterity and what you like rather than one being "better" than another.

Will,

Guide foot prepartion is one of the most important aspects in rod building.

Mike McComesky has a photo under misc. pg #9 which shows a well prepared guide foot. Take a look at that.

Hope this helps.

Guide Prep ... Mick McComesky ... Basic guide prep.
Maybe it will help someone out as a visual aid.

Mick McC. says: "Hard to describe how I like my guide feet. I also wanted to show that while pre-ground guides are better than un-ground, they still aren't good enough, at least for what I like."

"For this and most others I do, I use hand files. A large one to rough out, some needles to clean them up, and a round one for the bottom. If I'm in a hurry though, I will use a disc or drum on the drill press or dremel with whatever stones and/or sanding drums I grab at the moment, finishing with needle filing. Filing is relaxing to me, so every so often, I grab a few and sit down in front of the TV or outside and just go to it. ..." -Mick McComesky
