Are there any "guidelines" for how far below the guide foot to start wrapping the guides on? Does it change with progressively larger guides on the spinning rods? If I want to put a little color next to my tip top, do I wrap just up to the tip top? or, from the tip top down?
Sorry for all the rookie questions, but we all got to start somewhere!! Re: guide wraps

Casey, I usually start my wraps 3 wraps off of the end of the guide feet, no matter what size guide, unless I'm doing something for astetics sake. Although each wrap is the same for each guide, the length of the foot governs the wraps total length.
I wrap my TT's from the top down. Hope this helps! Regards......Doug@ TCRds Re: guide wraps

Its all personal preference. I like small wraps.
For single foot guides, I start one thread turn on the blank, and then up the foot. There is usualy a length difference on most double foot guide feet.. I measure each from the toe to where the guide frame begins to slope upward to find the longest foot. I wrap the longest one first, and then adjust how far off the guide foot I need to start my wrap to have equal wrap sizes for that guide. Stop your wrap when the guide foot starts upward. There are probably other ways of doing this, but this one works for me. For tip tops. I start the wrap on the blank, working towards the tip top, wrapping close and then burnishing. pack 'em tight! I start wrapping from the top to the butt. I wrap the first guide from the top, then after it is done I measure it with a compass. The Tip top I wrap about one MM smaller. I usually wrap from left to right, learn to do the top from right to left, it makes it easer to pack the thread up to the tube. The second guide I will add about 2 MM longer because of the blank taper. If they are the same size but the blank gets thicker as I go to the butt, the guides look shorter so I add to each one. A compass with two pointers works good to measure these. With a screw adjustment. Re: guide wraps

Occasionally, I will make a wrap longer than the actual foot. However, most of the time, my second turn is wrapping over the guide foot. And, I try to start my forhan locking wrap early enough that I have very little thread beyond the ring. I'll allow myself longer thread wraps if the rod is an UL rod, etc., as it's gonna' feel extremely light regardless.
What Bill said is true. As the blank diameter increases, the short wraps (i.e. just enough to cover the guide foot) actually look shorter than the same size guide wraps near the tip. In the past, I tried to make them look the same length, but then I finally decided that I didn't want that extra weight. Granted, it's not much weight at all, and if it pleases your aesthetic sensibilities, then go for it. But for me, keeping weight to a minimum was more important. I wrap the guide near the tip first. Then, I wrap the tip-top the same length as that guide wrap. If my guide wrap is 8mm long, I measure out and start my tip-top wrap 8mm away from the tube. I wrap the whole thing without laying down a pull-through thread. When I get to the tube, I lay down my pull-through, then wrap back over the thread I just wrapped, and head the other way. I do this for something like 1/3 of the length of the wrap. Then, I pull my tag end through. This stair-stepped effect makes a nice smooth transition to the tube. Once there's epoxy on it, it looks perfect. Re: guide wraps

I do a lot of two color guide wraps. I do not change colors once on the guide foot so the first color is completed before the second color begins the foot. This two color wrap is done for asethetics only and what I find most pleasing to the eye is for the length of the first color wrap (off the guide foot) to be equal to the diameter of the rod at that point.
