Hello,
I'm helping a friend who has never built a fly rod build his own rod. He bought a Stowaway blank from Cabelas and it came from the factory with a decal/label already at the handle. He doesn't want to see that label because he wants to show his pride that he built it. We did thread wraps over the decal to cover it up and then applied the finish but the decal bled through the wraps and the finish so you can clearly read it. How could we prevent the decal from bleeding through? We are doing another rod for a different friend together and want to avoid that again if we can. Thanks BjR Re: applying new decal over an old one.

1st... I set out to make a nice presentationof the label area including the MFG label which is nice to have on a rod if a warrranty work is needed. You did Assemble the rod. Did you cut the flags and roll the blank?, plus many pay extra for that brand name reconition. Companies and many clients rely on name recognition as you will also. I'll jaz up this area by putting in not only the MFG label (often cutting it down to a manageable size) a fish decal, the owners name, who built it, MFG blank designation if not on MFG label, line test recommendation, date, bookending this label feature with matching a thread wraps and a hook keeper incorporated into one side. Short of a fancy butt weave this is what the owner sees the easiest and many inspect closely to tell whats what.
Ok you don't want it, Mask off the area under the threads and spray some dark krylon paint over it. or lightly scrape off the label with an exacto knife, if you start scraping up the blank color your going to deep, but not ruining the blank. You might want to try a different darker thread color (try a test sample) to see if the label color bleeds through or not. Re: applying new decal over an old one.

CP! CP !CP! Thread without CP on it will become translucent. Another option would be to color some finish with pigment and cover it.
Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Re: applying new decal over an old one.

Black thread or dark thread with cp.
You should not see anything through the thread if it is dark enough. Re: applying new decal over an old one.

Any color thread wraps wil work as long as you pack it tight and USE COLOR PRESERVER!! Raymond Adams Eventually, all things merge, and a river runs through it.. Re: applying new decal over an old one.

Removed the same label on the same rod with a green scotchbrite pad, just go easy and rub a little tru oil on the rod where you abraided it. Re: applying new decal over an old one.
