I want to build a rod that will primarily be used to jump Tarpon maybe the occaisional Permit or Big Snook. Unfortunatly I have never been so I could use some help. I don't want to make it too heavy or long so it wears you out casting all day. My first thought was 9'- 10WT Dan Craft or a Loomis GLX. Am I thinking right? Could use some advise from an experianced Tarpon Jumper!
thanks Joe Re: Tarpon fisherman/ Tarpon rod advise

Stick to an 8 or 8'6" model. They will be easier for you to cast and fight fish with. I went this route last year and will not ever go back to a 9' rod for big powerful fish like tarpon. Re: Tarpon fisherman/ Tarpon rod advise

Andy Dear at Lamar Fishing would be an excellent source of info and materials. He's to the left. Re: Tarpon fisherman/ Tarpon rod advise

It depends how big the tarpon are. Anything near 100 lbs. will be a challenge on a 9 wt. but for babies in the back country (40 lbs.) you have a chance. Tarpon are brutal on tackle. For big tarpon you'll need a 12 wt. Rarely will you jump any fish wading the flats and casting all day, so a bigger, heavier rod is not an issue. This 12 wt. can do double-duty as a shark rod (with wire leader) and you'll run across many more shark than tarpon. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
