Rephrasing reel seat/handle question

Had no responses from the first question & based on my confusion,(first time building on a fly blank) I probably didn't state very well what I was asking, so here goes again. I am building a fly/spin combo on a 8' 3-4 wt fly rod. I will be turning my first handle on a new lathe just purchased. After I install a reverse half well & a fly seat to the blank I would like to be able to add a 3-4 inch removeable rear grip for spin fishing. Mud hole has a fighting butt extension (AFBE). Can I use this along with the adaptor plug & make a removeable rear grip for spinning or should I just add a permanent 3-4" rear grip? Personally , I would rather be able to use the total length of the rod when fly fishing instead of sacrificing the 3" on performance. Thus be able to remove the rear grip. All responses welcome. Thanks again, Jim

i think i would go for the removable extension plug.itf it unscrews.you could order 2 one for a regular fly rod fighting butt and the other you could strip down add a extension to it then re cork it.

Sure, you can do exactly what you propose. The only limiting factor is going to be the length you can create on the end of that extension. You may have to oversleeve the extension shaft in order to lengthen it enough to get the length you want for your butt grip. Not a big deal.

One other thing I will mention regards the strength of the attachment to the reel seat. These extensions are made for 2" to 3" fighting butts, not 4"+ rear spinning rod grips. However, on light spin rods and assuming the seat and detachable extension have a good attachment, you should be able to get by well enough.

Jim
This fighting butt cap [shop.mudhole.com] will take a 1/4" threaded rod or bolt you can get from home depot. They should have short sections. A little added weight but you can cut it to the size you want and build any cork onto it
Just make sure every thing is " centered "
