I have an 8 foot 6 inch 4 wt. blank that i would like to try cutting down to a 7 foot 6. My ? is if i cut it down that much is it going to change the wt. of the line that i should use or will it be ok. Another ? i have is should the blank be cut equally on each end or should i cut from the butt end, which will leave me with the ferrul more towards the butt end. Will this hurt if i do it that way? This is a cheap no name blank that i don't mind cutting so i won't be broken hearted if experimenting would ruin the blank. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, JOHN Re: cutting down a blank ?

It will change the power of the blank so the line used at any distance will likely be different. The action will also change, drastically. That's a lot to cut.

Tom & or John
Can you place the blank in your CCS fixture with 1 foot protruding out the back & rate the blank before cutting? Gil Re: cutting down a blank ?

Yes. And you can also affix the penny bag at any point behind the tip and see what cutting from that end will do.

Table of Effects of TRIMMING or EXTENDING a ROD BLANK on its Various Performance Properties [www.rodbuilding.org]
This Table is a general summary, assuming a 1-piece rod. Lite-power rods with fast taper-action tips are the most affected by trimming. Tom Kirkman & Gil McMillan (above) have described THE way by static loading to predict the effects of your trimming plans before you cut. For an assessment of the effects on the dynamic character of the rod, you can mock-up the rod blank with the reel seat in it's new estimated position, and tie a lure of typical weight off the rod tip and wave it around. For a fly rod, do a mock-up mounting of the reel seat and the line guides, but place the last tip guide in the estimated position of the new rod tip. Then try some Test Casting. These two methods have been proposed by Mr. Tom Kirkman in (an) earlier Post(s) to which I lost the citation(s). ... Admittedly and unfortunately, for a fly rod, some interference may come from the section of rod tip sticking above the new rod tip guide. But that is about as close as you can get to knowing the outcome before you actually trim the tip or the butt end of the rod. ... IMO, ... Good Luck, ... -Cliff Hall+++ Edited 2 time(s).
