I know you're poking fun, but I honestly haven't looked. Tom & I exchanged e-mails about this a while back and I have really appreciated how diligently he monitors the forum and the atmosphere he provides for us builders. On our home e-mail address about a year ago we began to get all kinds of junk. The ISP spamblocking software did a great job but it was aggravating to get it anyway. We have young kids and I don't know when I'll ever feel comfortable letting them get online. It's one thing when somebody goes looking for it, but it's a whole different level when it's "knocking on the door unsolicited" like this stuff.

lol. I hear you on the unsolicited stuff. I average about 75 SPAM's per day here at work. Frustrating to say teh least.

I think we are all in agreement how well Tom monitors this sight. Every now and then we get hit with junk or just plain garbage. I use this email just for rod building Then I have a personal email, Pulse the email I get from my server. I have a hard wired fire wall. Pulse. All three emails have spam protection. Guess what I still get spamed by someone wanting a hot date, get a collage degree and the famous you have been approved for a loan. As a rule there has been different emails sent, but they have the same name. So I guess no matter what we have for a protection, someone well get through.

There are "bots" (mechanized) computing scripts that do search interenet sites in order to auto post links to various sites. I do what I can to ban them as they come in but they often just get a new one and start over. It's a problem on all the forums these days.

Spam mail doesn't originate to or from this site. It is almost entirely the result of people using Yahoo, HotMail, etc. These companies make their living selling the addresses of those who use their service, along with anyone their users mail to or receive mail from. You didn't think they were providing you an email service for free, did you?

Anyway, we'll try to keep the site clear of the nonsense. When it happens, just ignore it and one of us will get to it as soon as we can.

I encourage everyone, regardless of where or how they use their computers, to have as much protection as possible. Make sure that you have a good firewall between you and the outside world. Your ISP should provide one, but you can use the Windows XP firewall or an off-the-shelf one if they don't. You should also have a spyware blocker running all the time on your computer, and run the system check at least once a week. You should definitely be running a good antivirus 24/7 with regularly scheduled system scans, and have spam protection running 24/7 as well. Most of the products out there are reasonably priced and do a good job.

Aside from being a rod builder, I am an IT person with 20+ years of experience. I definitely know that there are people out there, all over the planet, who are using the internet to probe for weaknesses constantly. Their goals range from being an annoyance to inflicting serious damage. I urge you to keep on top of things and use the list feature found in most software to block specific sites and/or addresses. One of the best steps that you can take is to NEVER open an e-mail that you are not sure about. Don't even let it appear in the "viewing pane". It's important that you never respond to any e-mail or web link unless you are positive of its origin and real use. You'll never be 100% free of malevolent idiots, but you can go a long, long way toward preventing them from causing you grief or worse.

I receive very few spam emails on my "home" ISP email servers, or the yahoo. accounts. Yahoo has a pretty effective spam engine that "learns" as you mark junkmail as spam, to the point that I may get maybe 2-3 spam emails a week at the yahoo account. I have email accounts through my ISP too, they have spam filters, and those accounts are protected with spam filtering firewalls on my computer. Sometimes personal and legitimate email inadverdently gets trashed by one of the filters, but that is the result of the sender using a service that has been identified as a spam orgin.

As Tom said, there are software bots out there that run 24/7 scanning the net for email addresses for harvest.

I did have one instance 2 or so years ago where one of the sponsors of this board begin spamming me, but Tom immediately put a stop to it.

I use NO spam or pop up blocker blocker and never will. My computer is on an open internet connection for 18 hours a day, I use only one e-mail address (plus my wife uses one) and have not had a pop up in years and I get no spam! The key is to take control of your cookies, use something like Ad Aware and use common sense with your computer. Trusting 3rd party software to tell you what you are going to receive is ludicrous

Your lucky Mike!! I have a FireWall, Spam Blocker My IP server does not check for this. I also use Norton's Systemworks. I run my systemworks to recheck all my settings. This house has 2 computers and one lap top running 24/7. Plus we have kids/grandkids that stop by on their way to who knows where and want to check their mail. Even with our protection sometimes something slides threw, but I get a warning
