1.
Cork is very dense and does not take dies well. All you get is a surface color that in time, will ware off. What you need to do is once you get the color you desire is put a top coat over it like a urethane finish coat. This in its self will, change the feeling of the cork. Good luck Good Wraps Bob Re: coloring cork handles

Just Minwax stain and Trondak Cork Seal work very well. Still looks and feels like cork. Re: coloring cork handles

Which Minwax stain would make the rootbeer color? Ralph If at first you don't succeed, go fishing, then try, try again. Re: coloring cork handles

The bigger hardware stores should have wood swatches you can compare to your blank. Re: coloring cork handles

Rootbeer: Minwax Dark Walnut
[www.rodbuilding.org] That may be a shade darker than what you want, but minwax is cheap enough that you can grab a few cans and experiment. The lighter one is stained with minwax pickled oak, and both are treated with Truoil. Re: coloring cork handles

When you get stain -- do not get the stain and sealer combination. get just a stain. The stain and sealer after you put on a coat, if you want to put another on to darken it, the sealer in it seals out another coat and it will only take one coat. Re: coloring cork handles

I understand that I would mix stain and the sealer. I currently have U-40 sealer and assume a sealer is a sealer (???) What is the ratio and if I mix them would that prevent a second coat if i wanted to get darker?
Really appreciate the help. Re: coloring cork handles

Don't mix the stain and sealer. Stain the grip to get the color you want, let the stain dry and then put the sealer on. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
