I have a friend that wants me to build him a rod and just use gold metallic thread on all the guides. Is there a problem with this i have only used this thread as a trim wrap or in a weave. Thanks Sam

Gudebrod Ht metallic is just as strong as their nylon, HT size A metallic would work just fine-not too subtle however.......

Not a problem Sam. I have done that many times and never had a problem. I have also used Anton Robinson and it holds up fine too and it is easier to work with than Gudebrod. Thanks to Ken P. I have a wider color range and am in the process of experimenting with it in weaves with Madeira. They are about the same size. Go for it.

Sam: I have built two rods using Gudebrod metallic and it worked just fine. I added a different color trim wrap of the same thread and it really added a nice look.

I have found the Sulky metallics to work well for this purpose. I find that they are less apt to fray or snag than others.

No problem Gudebrod HT is an improvement over their older met threads then recommended for butt and trim wraps only. NOW its reinforced with a nylon core increasing the break strength substancially to where it can easily be recommended for guide wraps. Sz "A" only gives it plenty of wraps on the guide foot and well packed gives a few more wraps per inch to gain strength from*****NOTE there are many many shades of GOLD available I would not use Gudebrod 9000 met gold thread on my worse ememies rod (if I had a worse ememy) That 9000 thread bearly looks gold especially in flat light. I do however really like the look of their 9004 OLE GOLD more an antique Gold deeper in hue, OR for a bright Gold I'd use, and really do like, the 9009 glitzy gold, this stands out, and easily recognizable as GOLD...real snazzy

Sulky Original Metallic comes in 3 shades of gold, 7003 light gold, 7007 gold, 7004 dark gold and 7005 brass. If you have a thread store nearby take a look. I like the brass as it is not as bright and shiny as the golds.

Is it necessary to use CP on the Sulky, being a machine thread?

You can make the gold wrap look a bit less garish if you wrap it side by side with another color. I've done glitzy gold/metalic pearl together and the overall effect is still bright gold but WAY more subtle than just a solid gold wrap.

I don't but most of the time I use Permagloss as my initial coat so that should have the same effect.

I have to agree with Chris that 9000 gold is not a particularly good gold color. 9004 Ole' Gold is all I ever use now. It matches almost all gold reel seat hoods better.

I've never had problems with Sulky rejecting epoxy. To me there is no CP needed. Works just fine.
