Decreasing the viscosity of Thread Master finish?

Has anyone tried reducing the viscosity of the new Thread Master epoxy finish? On my lighter flyrods, I'm used to a low or lite build. Would a few drops of acetone or alcohol reduce viscosity but maintain the other traits of the finish. Thanks for your input before I begin experimenting.

Rob,
I don't recommend you thin ThreadMaster...or any finish for that matter. It's a risky practice to get into. Just because a lot of people do it, and recommend it doesn't mean it's correct.
Why don't you just warm it a bit? You have to remember that the difference between 70 degrees and 80 degrees may not feel like a lot to you, but to an epoxy it can mean a world of difference in viscosity.
Besides, ThreadMaster doesn't need to be thinned to get a thin coat on your wraps. I am using it unthinned and unwarmed on flyrods as small as 4wt. and am getting what amounts to be the thinnest flattest finish I have ever achieved with any finish.....It's all in your application.

I recommend you practice with it as is, or perhaps warmed up a bit before you think anymore about acetone.

Regards,

Andy Dear

Use a stiffer brush and you'll get a thinner coating.

Rob,

I warm the bottles in my hands before mixing and there's a noticeable thinning difference that I like.

Dear Friends,
I have spent the last few minutes reading all the "requirements" and "application ideas" of how one mixes, handles and applies epoxy rod thread finishes. Some like it thin and some like it thick. It you are working on any rod, at the beginning the epoxy is thin and as you progress it gets thicker- the nature of epoxy as it cures. I use American Tackle's epoxy and have for the last three years. Easy to mix and lasts at least 60 minutes on any day I have used it. And when it gets thicker, and I have a nice butt wrap I am finishing, the last remaing epoxy gets applied to the butt wrap as a very thick coat.

My point is, what difference does it make if the final end result is that all of the threads are covered to a smooth, glassy coat, whether it takes 6 coats of thin or three coats of thick.

Charlie
