How do you order winding checks? Do you measure with a calipher and then order 2 or 3 sizes to get the correct one? What's the best way to get close with the size. Also, LA Garcia's video suggested the check should slide down the blank to within an inch or 2 of the handle. You should then file it to fit.

Also, are there different winding checks for spinning rods?

Measure at the forgrip and get several sizes up and down. When on I put several drops of CP to glue it on then finish over

I use a micrometer and use the next size up. For ordering, you can't go wrong with what Bill said. Winding checks are like tips, it's worth a few dollars to have several different sizes in your parts bin. I don't agree with the idea of getting a small one and trying to file it to a flush fit. First off, it's not the easiest thing to do and second, a metal check that is snug on the blank makes me nervous, especially on a smaller rod that might flex in that area, even a little. To me, the perfect size allows for a thread wrap underneath.

About your other post, again, what Bill said. A winding check is an option. If you don't want to use one, don't. Purely cosmetic. If you like the look of your grip without one, great. Sometimes a check just looks out of place on some rods.

If you like the fit/finish between grip and blank, use nothing. If you don't and want to cover it up and don't like the look of any commercial check (metal, rubber, vinyl) you can use whatever you want. Make an epoxy ramp, make an epoxy check and marbelize it, build up some thread, cut a plug of grip material and drill it out, epoxy mixed with grip sanding dust, build up with peacock feather strands, polymer clay, jewelry.. real or costume, drill out a small button, brass or copper plumbing fittings, polish up a chicken bone, etc. Look around the house or go wander around a craft store, sears, home depot, just about anywhere and use your imagination. I once used a blue guide insert that I popped out of the frame. No rules here, just whatever you think looks good.

Toe rings-ear rings, any type of ring you can think of, as long as it looks good.

I found as a general tenitive rule, you can deduct .060" from the butt dia. of the blank that is usually 14" from the butt end. But measuring at the approx location, buying a slightly smaller chack, and trimming to fit, is the best option

I get the first two sizes down from the butt diameter. Works for me.
