A friend of mine (non-english speaker) would like to know if and what treatments bone needs in order to survive and look good in rod grips or reel handles.
All answers (I'll translate them to him) will be highly appreciated. Cheers, Sakari Re: Bone in grips and hadles?

Bone is used in knife handles and such... my understanding is that since it is a porous surface it just needs to be sealed. (I think that's mostly to keep it clean and smooth looking) I used to have a friend that was a taxidermist, he used an acrylic clear finish on european mounts. (skull mounts) I don't know what kind though. Re: Bone in grips and hadles?

For me, I do nothing but polish it and use it.
Wipe the rod free of any moisture after fishing with it and it will last you for many years. I have rods with ivory, horn, stag and wood. Some are many years old with MANY HOURS of fishing on them in all types of climates. They still look as though they were recently made. They do look that good. Polish the handle well and go fishing. Take care of the handle and it will last you a LONG time. Terry Re: Bone in grips and hadles?
