I need some help, I am trying to do a butt wrap using double spacing on a rod with an OD of 40mm, I am doing a two tone star. I have measured precisely and the first set of threads are right on the marks but I cannot get the subsequent threads to lie against the others, I have started over three times to no avail, I have now switched to regular thread and I am not having a problem, what am I doing wrong with the metallic threads. This is not the first problem using metallics.
Thanks Ed Re: Metallic thread

Metallics tend to slide alot on eachother. Things I've done to work around this constant slipping is 1) lay down two size A mettallics at a time early in the pattern (no one will notice or care) 2) be patient untill I have enough background thread layed down to actually keep the threads in position 3) add an occasional nylon thread here or there to help "bind" the pattern....the nylon may break up the look of the pattern, but who really cares, it serves a function. I don't do complicated wraps! What I do is apply a very, very small amont of permagloss to tack the thread down. You can move the threads with a pick prior to or durning the application of the permagloss. (You need to remove any marked threads before permagloss application.) I can then lay the thread down up against the tacked thread to minimize the sliding. I then apply a very thin coat of permagloss to tack down the entire wrap. At this point I try to keep my hands off the thread.
For what ever it is worth, This is from a "green horn". Ed Smith Re: Metallic thread

You're not doing anythign wrong. If I do a pattern which I need to use Metallics on the first Pass is to lay down a Nylon/Polyester thread first. That first pass will not be seen once the pattern is complete, nobody will have a magnifying glass to check to see you did every pass in sequence. Dont' worry about it.
