Guides: How many is too many?

6'6" fast action casting rod. In order to keep the line off of the rod it appears I'm going to set a record for the greatest number of guides. Constructive comments invited and welcomed.
Taking this a little further, I've not seen charts for guides that take the action of the rod into account. Just one of those experience things, right ?
Thanks all!

Richard; You're not giving us much to go on here but if you have read the articles in the library on this site for guide placement and follow the advice there, I would say whatever the rod is telling you will be correct.

Richard,
I do a lot of bass rods in the 6 to 7 ft catagory, after flex testing I usually end up with 6 or seven guides. Don't know how this compares with your tests as you did not state what your record with most number of guides came to.

Hi Richard.
On my 7` spinning rod I have 8 guides and it works like a charm :-)
The blank /reel combination will tell you how many and what size guides to use.
Thanks to Tom it´s all in the library here, just make sure you will use the smallest and lightest guides possible considering reel and line size and you will be fine.
Thanks
-Kim-

Most bass rods, spinning and casting have 1 more guide than the length of the rod:

6' rod = 7 guides

7' rod = 8 guides

and so on.

Depending on the rods action these are variables, but work pretty well in most cases. If your 7' rod looks perfect with 9 guides, you can most likely remove one, cut down the weight by doing so and still make a dandy setup with 8 guides. Just figure having 1 more guide than the rods length in feet to get you started.

Agree with Duane. Rule of thumb is 1 guide for each foot of length + 1 and the tip. Then static test, adjust, cast, adjust, then tie 'em down.
