SQUARE CORK GRIP

THIS IS ONE OF MY FIRST RODS TO RE-DO SO BEAR WITH ME. I HAVE AN OLDER MODEL 2 PIECE KINGFISHER ROD. THE GRIP AND REEL SEAT ALSO DETACH FROM THE ROD AND ARE HELD ON WITH A PRESSURE TYPE FITTING. THE CORK ON THE GRIP IS ALMOST COMPLETELY GONE. MY GRANDFATHER USED THIS ROD HIS WHOLE LIFE. UNDERNEATH THE CORK GRIP IS SQUARE, NOT ROUND. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO ATTACH A NEW GRIP. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT A NEW CORK GRIP WOULD NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT AREA TO ADHERE TO EPOXY DUE TO THE SQUARED OF CORNERS THAT WOULD BE BENEATH IT. I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO WRAP THE GRIP WITH CORD AND THEN SEAL IT RATHER THAN CORK BUT STILL AGAIN IF I WRAP IT WITH CORD THE GRIP WILL END UP SQUARE. I AM LOST.

There are several ways to go about this - first, you could shim the blank and mount a round piece of scrap graphite blank and then mount your handle on top of that. Or, you can dip the end of the blank in epoxy, let it set, and then turn it round. You can epoxy lengths of cord or similar onto each of the 4 flats which will then increase the contact area for mounting the grip. Let your imagination go - you have a lot of options here.

Polyurethane glue will expand a lot and would probably do a good job of filling the voids.
