Hi
I just received two 6wt blanks that FedEx decided to break in half. I was thinking of making ice rods with the tips and reamers with the rest. I looked at a few retail ice rods to get a good idea of guide size and spacing. Can anyone suggest what kind of guides to use? Is there any guide ring material that reduces ice build up better than others? Thanks for any help! Jeff Ogden, UT Re: Ice Rod Guides?

I use just plain old hardaloy guides, ice is gonna stick to most anything. Spacing depend on the length, I tape the guides on and do a flex test with each ice rod same as I do with a full size rod, your line just needs to follow the blank without any sharp bends, no need to worry about casting. Guide size depend on line size and whether you fish in an ice house or outdoors. I use smaller guides on a rod that will be used in an ice house since icing will be less of an issue and larger guides for a rod that will be used outside. The difference is the larger guides will take longer to ice up and picking or @#$%& ice out of guides is a pain in the you know what.
