Reaming Corks

I am looking for some advice on how to spead up the cork reaming process. Currently I am using hand reaming techniques which is fine for fly rod grips but I am currently building salmon mooching rods and there is up to 30 corks per rod. Does anyone have any tricks or tools that they use to speed up the process?

Greg, you can speed up the reaming process by pre-drilling your rings to the smallest OD the grip will be adhered to, then finish reaming from there.

I use a small drill press with a cone-shaped rasp (from Home Depot) bit to ream individual rings. Not the best to keep the hole perfectly centered, but, has worked well for me.

Thanks for the advice, what type of drill bit are you using. I tried that and the bit chewed the cork apart. Also, how do you keep the center hole aligned when power reaming?

I glue the rings up before reaming, and use a regular round file. Have a couple different sizes I bought from Walmart. Just be real sure to run the drill backwards, or the file is pulled into the cork and will cause a split.

The best way to do a lot of cork ring with a cork reamer is make your cork reamers with solid glass blanks then chuck them into your drill press or wrapping machine and ream out the rings or cork grips. The reason you use solid glass blanks is they won't crack when you torque them down on the drill press or wrapping machine chuck. It is really fast and smooth and the holes are perfect.

You can also put the reamer in a hand drill
