Spiral Wrap Live Bait Rod

Hey Tom. . . I read the “Building Live Bait Rods” article in your latest publication. Your timing is perfect. I’m about to order a Seeker blank and go to work on my first spiral wrap. I’ll be using 15# line on my rod and will use it as my striper rod on Lake Lanier in GA. Do you have suggestions on guide sizes for the first three guides coming off the reel?

If you use the standard low frame casting type, I'd probably steer you to a #16 and then a 12. If you use a spiral (bumper wrap) I'd use a low frame casting type #8 or #10 for that. It would go between the 16 and the 12.

If the reel used is terribly wide or high, then a 20 might be in order for the butt guide, but I think you'll be fine with the 16.

I'll bring some live bait rods for you to look over and see what you think.
