Repair Question!

Hey Everyone!
When is someone or some rod finish manufacturer going to come up with a quick set up rod finish. I'm talking a working time of 30min and complete set up time of 1-2 hours. I t would be great for doing repairs. Alot of times I have just guides to do, one or two on each rod, it would be awesome to have them done and back the customers in sort amount of time. I know some are going to say get more driers but with limited cash and most of all space that is not going to work. I think it is a great idea! Anyone else with me?

I'd think that a 2 part finish that sets up COMPLETELY cured in 1 or 2 hours would be near brittle? At least it would't likely be very flexible. There are 2 part finishes with this short of working time and they are nearly dry to touch in two hours at 72 degrees ambient, though. They're just not FULLY cured in that time frame is all.

when i first started out i used the guedbrod on part finish believe it was the 811 but dont quotes me. If memory serves me correct it had a much fater set up time than the flexcoat that i use now. Was just never overly impressed with the guedbrod and now live or die with my flexcoat.

A quick set up time does not necessarily indicate a brittle final cure. Not necessarily.

At the National Rod Builders Show, Diamondite finish will be demonstrated. It cures by exposure to natural UV light and will easily set up in the time frame you mentioned. It does work a bit differently and whether or not you'd like it depends on a lot of variables. I hope to have a review/report on it in a future issue of RodMaker.

Merrick Tackle currently offers a similar but even faster curing UV system. This one cures the finish completely in about 15 seconds via the use of a special UV light curing box. Great for quick repairs where you need to get the guy back on the water the same day.

Back in 88 and 89 when I worked in this tackle shop we used 5 min.epoxy quite a few times for "emergency repairs" when the customer didn't want to leave his rod. Jesse
